    Cord Bridge Hammock Question

    G'day all

a question for the Bridge Hammock DIYers out there.

I tried absorbing as much of TeeDee's many posts on bridge hammocks and am about to start my own cord edge hammock. (thank you TeeDee and Grizz for the instructions!)

i read about trying to sew as close to the cord wrap to cause more friction on the cord to prevent the material slipping into the middle when weight is added.

Q: Why are we avoiding sewing straight through the cord if it is hollow core?
does that weaken the cord? surely the needle would pass through all layers easily enough. in my thoughts it would certainly stop any slippage but it seems too simple an answer.

Reference this thread. Concern is that if the cord when sewed is not pretty much exactly in the position it assumes under tension, there's a risk to tearing the fabric when the stitch line straightens out. That said, it's been done successfully. A bit high risk for my taste.

My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

haha yeah australia sure does suck for us DIY'ers

1 inch poly webbing (seatbelt) at BCF cut to measure

2 inch poly webbing (did you really want this?) at Whitworths marine (also sells dyneema)

Question regarding sewing channels for cord suspension. Do you just put a roll on the edge and sew it back on itself to make the channel for the amsteel cord or do you need to do something more robust? Don't want the amsteel to cut through the fabric and don't want the channel to pull out.

Of course, don't want to make it harder on myself than necessary either

Being the cautious sort, I have used a double layer for the channel. No known failures as yet...

Sorry to be dense, but still kind of new at "Textile Engineering" (sound manlier, don't you think )

So, assuming that you want a channel with a 1 inch circumference, you would fold down one inch from the edge and sew. The fold one more inch down and sew, then route the cord, right?

Side question - what would you use for the circumference for a 7/64" Amsteel line? I guess that I can just measure, but didn't know if there was a standard length that works well.

    Thanks again,
