How tall is he? If he's as tall as Thing1, who is 5'6", my Osprey Atmos 25 would fit him.

I bought my son (he's 13) the Kelty Coyote 4750. The pack's torso length is very adjustable and should serve him through adulthood (assuming the gear bug doesn't bite him the way it has his Dad ). We have a father and a son in our Boy Scout troop who each have a Kelty Coyote and they both fit them fine!
Unfortunately, I don't have one I'm selling, but you might want to consider one (or finding a used one!).
I would take them to an REI (or similar store) and have them help you "size" backpacks for fit. You'll learn a great deal about the different adjustment and fit options whether you find the right pack or not.
+1 on the Kelty line. They have a number of packs for youth that are top notch.

I'll chime in on the Kelty Coyote 4750.
Just got a new one on Ebay for my 13 year old son for under $70. Same seller is now running them for $103 w/ free shipping.
We went to a couiple of high-end stores to get him fitted on the Osprey and Gregory ones. Best fit for him was an Osprey Ariel, but he wasn't too hot on having a "woman's" pack.
Tried out the Kelty 4750 at Bass Pro Shops and he said the fit felt about the same as the Ariel.

Thanks for the information about the Kelty Coyote. I'll have to check into that one also.

Ok I am going to follow this thread also. I happened to be laying in bed this morning thinking the same thing. He has a kelty external right now not sure of model but it is a Jr something. Looking for something to carry more than he has in the past. I cant carry that much stuff for 6 days for both of us.
My 12 year old and I will most likely celebrate his 13th birthday on a 6-10 day hike on the BMT this summer. Kind of a "right of passage type thing". Almost all cultures have this except ours.

I would look at the ULA CDT for a young hiker ($135). About 4 lbs lighter than a Kelty Coyote 4750. Use pad for frame and it will carry more than you would want to load up on a young hiker.
