    Why Stealth?

As I have been reading these forums, I have noticed that a lot of people are into "stealth hammocking", picking stealthy colors, etc.

My question is why? I feel like I am missing somethings. I definitely think it's cool to be unnoticed in camp, but I feel like there's more to it that I don't know. The reasons that I have seen so far are, hunting, safety of being left alone by other people on the trail, and an extension of LNT so as not to blight the landscape with gaudy colors.

    Am I missing something?

I always thought it meant avoiding the land owners so you don't get booted off the property. Also when you are on state / public lands and want to avoid the hassle of rangers / law enforcement. Nothing worse than a quick pack dump for a ranger or ECO (game warden) who sees a fishing pole and he thinks you might have illegal fish hiding somewhere.

EDIT: In northern NY, there are many small pieces of state land burried and surrounded by private lands. By "land owners" I mean being on state owned lands that private owners consider theirs due to very limited access.. They will walk into your camp and demand you leave.... and even argue the fact that there is a state marker 15 yards away!

I've never really liked most designated camp sites ... most are usually like highway intersections for the traffic some times of the year. So the privacy of being unseen is enjoyable. Hammocks expands the possibility of being able to do that effectively by using sites no one else can or could use. Just adds a level of fun to the whole thing especially when solo camping.

Then there's the whole issue of alien abduction!

Where i live, we are a lot of people sharing the same woods. So if you want some solitude, you got to stealth camp.
And as - Hawk-Eye stated; I don´t like designated camp spots, they tend to be pretty worn down and very messy - so for some "greater and wilder" experiences i go "stealth"

I don't worry about the color of my gear so much as the selection of my site. The right site could hide a blaze orange super-fly...

Last trip out, our site was only about 100' from the trail. We had three different groups of Scouts and another five or six pairs of hikers pass by and none of them knew we were there.

Besides... you should want to be seen. All the cool kids are in hammocks!

Well its not necessarily the gaudy colors of LNT but more the over use of one particular camp site over and over again. Some also like the challenge of stealth camping as well as on some trails such as the LT, AT etc. some sites are designated no camping meaning you have to sleep in shelter which mean you have to sleep on the ground. In these cases some people like to "stealth" camp so they can not be seen by other as well as not receive a citation by possible ridge runners or park rangers. As well as all the other reasons already stated. But the most important thing to remember when stealth camping is to remember not to forget where you camped
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

For me I just want to have the option to stealth camp if for some reason I ever felt the need. Plus, if I spend a lot of money on gear I atleast want to to be a color I like, or potentially even match (I'm a girl about that, haha). I think since we're all doing this because we love nature, it only makes since most of us are drawn to natural "stealthy" colors.
