Haha... the pond is visible on the TERRAIN display. It is not obvious on the SATELLITE display and is not shown on the TOPO display. It took me a while to locate that pond too.

The old road bed to the pond is shown on the TOPO display... I think.

Mandydawn and myself are still planning on being there. We will be driving over on Friday afternoon and hopefully making camp that night. Are we doing a group cook or are we fending for ourselves through the weekend?

bigbamaguy if others want to do a cookout works for me.
I had planned to fend for myself.

There's prob a store close enough so once folks arrive - that decision can be made then? Thoughts? I'll mention it to my few friends who might be joining us (non hammock members. maybe we can convert a few )

    Maybe others will chime in....

I was just at Pilcher's Pond this morning and had breakfast with a couple of other hangers that showed up around midnight. It turns out that it is on the Pinhoti Trail and the parking area is the trailhead for GA sections 10 & 11. http://www.georgiapinhoti.org/TrailG...rnMountain.htm

I hiked to the pond and saw the directions for the Pinhoti Trail at the sign board, hiked the Pinhoti Trail to John's Mountain, then the other side of the loops the John's Mountain Loop Trail and the Keown Falls Loop Trail make back to the Pinhoti Trail, and then backtracked back along the Pinhoti Trail to Pilcher's Pond. There are a lot of hiking opportunities. I may hike in on the Pinhoti Trail starting from Snake Gap next weekend.

Don't be fooled by the smaller pond that is about 1/4 mile in and is marked B on the map posted above, it is the larger pond that is about a mile in. Just follow the Pinhoti Trail markings- white blaze or a small diamond shaped sign with a turkey track. The nearest privy is at Keown Falls parking area on the other side of GA136-- about 2 miles away from Pilcher's Pond. People fish at the pond and bike travel is okay, at least from the trailhead parking at GA136 to the pond and along GA136 (I saw several on GA136)... but not horse travel, although I did see horse shoe prints.

The trailhead is about a 100 hundred yards or so north of the marked road to Keown Falls and on the opposite side of the road. There is no signage referring to Pilcher's Pond at the trailhead and any signage is in reference to the Pinhoti Trail... so think Pilcher's Pond on the PINHOTI TRAIL.

There is a little history to the Pilcher family that settled in that area in the 1840s. Their family cemetery is not too far from the pond and is worth the side trip. The pond was made in the early 1990s (and is why it is not on the topo maps that have not been updated since then) by a small earthen dam and stocked with fish. On the way in, the Pinhoti Trail branches off to the left from the main roadbed. It turns out that that branch forms a loop over the earthen dam; the cemetary is located on the non-Pinhoti side of that loop on a side road that goes 50 yards or so. It is a photo opp as the cemetery proudly points out their ancestry and some of its involvement in the Civil War.
