    Question Double Layer With VB

If I were to make a double layer gathered end hammock, couldn't I make the bottom layer out of silnylon? That would make a permanent vapor barrier that I could never forget, right? I'm assuming there's something wrong with the idea since it hasn't been done/isn't being done. If not silnylon, how about something like eVent so it's breathable? Is this just a silly thought?

It's not done because you will find a vapor barrier gets things wet unless your typical night temps are well below freezing. Some people find condensation just using a pad. Your body is going to be a source of condensation. This is why folks use vapor barrier liners in subzero temps - they want to keep the moisture from freezing inside the insulation of their sleeping bags, which unless kept under control will result in loss of loft.

I'd use regular nylon for an undercover for 3 season backpacking and keep the overcover separate, so you can leave it at home until you really need it.

Actually, it has been done, and is currently being done - with fairly positive results. Both Just Jeff and Mountainfitter here have used them, and I'm sure there's plenty more who can chime in. Lori is right about needing to be wary of moisture - condensation could be an issue, so could back sweat - but the concept is sound if you know how to regulate temperature properly. You'd need to be much more careful if the waterproof layer is above you.

See this thread for Just Jeff's sil hammock. That may give you something more to go on with the idea.

Hmmm, from Jeffs thread it sounds like it might actually work ok. By the way, I'm not actually making this hammock, it is just a thought in my head. I plan to buy my first one then DIY the rest. Thanks for the input.
