Help me decide on a tarp for bike travels.

I am slowly putting my shelter together for a long distance bike trip. I plan on putting together a hammock once all the supplies finally get here. I don't want to make my own tarp unless there isn't already one out there that will work for me.

    My thoughts:
    • Weight is nowhere near the issue it is for me as for the light hikers.
    • I want a tarp bigger than normal to provide some protection for my bike and related things.
    • Stealth camping is a consideration for sure.
    • I'd like to keep the cost down, but that never seems to happen.

There is always the possibility for some creative solution like a separate tarp to provide a little protection to the big. The tarps that seem to be around that struck me as possibilities were the Sportsmans Guide 12x12, and the HH Hex cheap and heavy version. There are some cat tarps out there, but they seem to be all in a different league of price. Any better ideas?

a large black trash bag might work...

the 12x12 camo and the HH woukld be good choices, the SG being a bit cheeper. and in camo.

if you want to build your own, black is one of te only good sil colors you can get. heavier fabrics are a little better.

SG has no 12x12 tarps that are currently shipping. Here's another 12x12 tarp option. Not the stealthiest though. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...questid=127177

I'm putting together a trip from DC to San Diego and have experimented, successfully, with using a HH hex tarp with a Speer Hammock, but more importantly, anticipating no trees, just remove front wheel of bike ( this is key to keep bike stable ) use seat or seat post for ridgeline tieing off two diagonal outriggers using bike as virtual pole and then staking the remaining three (or 5, on hex ) points. Most any tarp will actually do, if it is long enough...

I'm experimenting with the HH silnylon hex (12'x11') so far it has a great weight to coverage ratio, and I'm pretty happy with it. It's a little spendy though if you're on a low budget.

I'm testing it in heavy downpours and wind tonight.
