24" .210" OD Carbon Fiber Tubes

I'm wondering if anyone knows whether or not these would be rigid enough to use as spreader bars on a Switchback's bug netting? I'm looking at them online so it is difficult for me to determine. And how hard would it be to cut them down to 22"? Perhaps someone has a better suggestion for spreaders. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I don't know for sure if they will be strong enough as you don't list the wall thickness, but carbon fibre is very suitable for this job. I have carbon fishing rod sections of that OD that would easily work as spreader bars.

Cutting carbon tubes is dead easy with a sharp flat metal file. Use the file edge to cut the tube(wear a dust mask) and it will make a quick perfect cut with little fraying. Hacksaws don't work very well, leaving frayed ends.

Thanks, Turnerminator. I have found some .25" OD. I think I will give them a try. They're cheap. I was concerned about cutting the carbon fiber with a hacksaw. I hadn't even thought about a file.

If they are the same as the 0.210" OD carbon tubes I use, they have an ID of 0.132". I cut them with a fine tooth wood saw in a miter box... two or three quick motions for each cut!

I have a special use for that particular 0.210" OD/0.132" ID carbon tube. It's part of a pole mod set. Now that I have designed a way for Molly Mac Pack stiffeners to be removable, I will nest three carbon tubes, one inside the other, and slide two sets into a MMP. After removing the stiffeners, they can be put together for a tarp pole mod!

I think a 0.210" OD tube is too flexible for a bridge hammock spreader.

What size would you recommend, MacEntyre? I'd like to use a short rod inside to join them together so I can reduce the length of the tubes.

I just noticed that you thought these were for a bridge hammock. I'm only going to use them as spreaders on a Switchback's bug netting?

Geez! You would think I could have read that the first time!

Almost any of them will do. 0.210" OD is plenty strong for that application!

Use the 0.125" OD tube to join them together.

Thanks. I'm interested in that pole mod application. Is it on your website?
