I read somewhere about a guy who made a shirt with down sleeves and he used that in his hammock with a 20" pad to keep warm. Would this work with the JRB down sleeves and a vest? What's your opinions?

I would think they'd still compress, but maybe not enough to render them useless for casual cold.

i got a pair of the JRB down sleeves last year & i like them as part of my sleep system as well as around camp.
not long ago i got a down montbel half sleeve vest. it's extremely light & i plan to use it w/ the sleeves.
the half sleeves will over lap the JRB sleeves.
but at times i'll use different combinations...
half sleeve w/ JRB sleeves
JRB rocky mt snivler w/ sleeves
if it's really cold i may use both for long periods of hanging around camp.
i haven't spent any time w/ the half sleeve or the RMS yet, but i've used the sleeves several times & i was well pleased at how warm they were for such a small, light package.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
yep, the same as w/ a sleeping bag, the part that's on bottom or pressed up against the hammock wall will provide far less insulation.
but at the same time, if it's very cold the clothing will only be "part" of my sleep insulation.
and just like a sleeping bag, the sleeves (or other clothing) is compressed where it's... well, compressed<g> but it leaves no open space or edges for drafts.
really takes the edge of those middle of the night trips to the tree<g>.

I got to borrow slowhike's JRB sleeves up at Hurricane shelter... I wore them with a down vest. Nice color match/mix too, looked like I was wearing a black down coat with bright green sleeves.
It was nice to have them when hanging around camp, and they were useful to sleep in. I don't think I'd count on these for staying warm all night by themselves or with just a pad, unless it wasn't all that cold or windy. Any down that is compressed underneath you will not insulate to its full potential.
