12/21/2010 Solstice, total eclipse of the moon and a full moon night at -21*C.

On this overnight hike I learned a lot from my mistakes. For instance that it takes s lot of energy to heat your sleep system at -21*C (-5,8*F) (there were no wind), thus down is to be preferred.

MacEntyre’s IX Hammock Sock without SEEP added (it’s not a sock but an UQ).

HH SS outside silnylon layer added.

Believe you me, at night at -21*C it is too cold to get just the right picture.

Was that the maiden voyage for your Molly Mac Gear IX Sock without SEEP (it's not a sock but an UQ, insulated full length)?

How did you decide the order of the layers?

Thanks MacEntyre.

Yes that was the first time with Molly Mac Gear IX Sock without SEEP which I think is not a sock, but a superb UQ ( a sock has the hammock, UQ and all inside it).

Apart from the HH SS sock which should go on last, and the down as second last, the order of layers could be changed some what. And the space blanket must be right under the hammock.

But I am still in the learning phase.

I think so too, but at these low temperatures I think one should opt for a full down isolation system since the initial heating of down occurs very quick.

But then seen from a security aspect, synthetic insulation will survive some what from getting wet.

I don’t know. Got to ask Shug.

Great trip and pics! Sounds like a good insulation plan if it kept you warm at -21!

The tarp was nice and high so you could probably stand up under there...that's a great benefit to hammocking, IMO. No crouching to change clothes. If there were wind, it might get you a little warmer to hang it low and tight. Good thing you didn't have to deal with it...I bet just a slight wind would have made that -21F feel a little chilly...

Great report. -21*C is pretty darn cold! Here in Georgia, I consider 20*F to be pretty cold. Guys like you and Shug put this southern boy to shame with your cold weather exploits.
