    3 Season lightweight options?

    Hey chaps,

    After seeing this photo:

It got me thinking about maybe getting a new tarp. My current tarp is of reasonably weight for silnylon but I'm on a bit of a lightweight kick just now.

    So if I'm looking for:

    - SpinnUL rather than Cuben, but not a deal breaker
    - Cat cut
    - Able to 'close' the ends as above (a function I really like on my rectangular tarp), so enough tieouts per side (4) to allow this
    - 3 season in belly to stop our Scottish winds
    - 11-12 ft ridgeline length
    - panel pulls prefered.

ATM I'm thinking a Mamajamba, as it ticks most ofthe boxes, it doesn't have any midpoint tieouts and might be a bit, well, big. But help me out, are there any alternatives my google-fu haven't turned up?

You could have a custom tarp done by Brian at OES as he does tarps in spinn! With that it would have just what you want!

You could also try to contact the other tarp makers to see if they can do a custom one for you, can't hurt to ask!?!?

The bmj is pretty big and even in spinn with the door kit brings it to 20oz if you opt for the tie outs, which I'm sure you would. From what I've seen its a great tarp with plenty of coverage though. I'd love to have one.

You could always go with the edge in spinn, 8.25oz, and get the door kit, 7.2oz for expected windy/rainy nights. Only 15.45oz together.

I'm looking to get a zpacks 11 x 8.8 rectabgle so I can close doors if I want. Plenty of tie out options. Or for good weather only bring 4 stakes and use it like a hex tarp. Should be around 6oz and I got quoted around $250.

I understand about trapping air during winter, but if you are dressed & layered with your quilts, the long tarp would not provide any extra value... Right or wrong?

Hey I recognize that tarp too!
The guy that made it, and took the picture is a "real clown!"

Try OES tarps, and like previously stated you will probably get everything you want in a tarp as you descibed it.

I too looked at that picture I thought...."I want a tarp I can close up too"

Next week I'll probably order a custom 10.5'x10' cat cut of Brian at OES made from SpinnUL, Should only weigh about 15oz and will close up nice.

Right now I have a OES Standard inn SpinnUL and I too wanted to be able to close the ends up a bit. After looking around a lot, I figured the best way to close the ends up nice would be with a rectangular tarp. I could opt for a BMJ but figured by the time I added the doors or had some fitted to my OES by 2QZQ I'll be a bit lighter with an all SpinnUL tarp.

I'm not really trying to trap and heat, Mainly get better hammock end protection in winter and sideways rain I sometimes encounter.

I have been looking for a tarp with integrated doors, too. Since Brian says on his website that he does custom work, I contacted him. But I never got a reply. I figured that I had to wait until Scott is back in business.

Hmm door kit, thats a neat idea. Opens up the options because to begin with I was only thinking 'fixed' doors so to speak (limiting myself to large tarps) This photo below really put the sizes of the Warbonnet tarps in perspective for me. Really like the sizing of the Edge, I think with side pullouts it'd still give plenty of space inside even with a steep pitch. Now if only I could find some pictures of it with the doors on..

I haven't been able to find a single picture of the edge with the door kit on the net. I know there's atleast a few people with them though on here. If you're looking for fully intergrated doors maybe keep an eye out for a speer winter tarp. You could maybe even ask some of the makers if they could custom make you one in spinn. Worth a shot if nothing else works for you.
