DIY quilt storage bag?

I know that storing a down quilt in a stuff sack is a no-no. But, how large does the storage sac have to be in order to prevent wrecking the loft? What kind of material is best for this application?

I've always heard hang it in a closet. But I'm interested to hear what the experts have to say!

Best for any quilt is laid flat. Second best is a large oversized bag that does not compress the loft. Mesh or loose cotton laundry style bags work well. Hanging can let the insulation settle, compressing it self.

With our personal quilts, once I cam certain that they are 100% dry, the get either put inside a very large tote or laid out on top of it. The lid on the tote stays cracked just for good measure, but if I wanted to seal it I would add some large desiccate packs.

I don't mind him sleeping on them so much but it's the way he hacks and claws at them as he's bedding down.

I've gone back to large cotton bags again now.

I made them from old bed sheets and copied the first one from a Mountain Equipment bag I already had. I'd say they're about 80L in capacity, roughly a 16" diameter round base and maybe 3ft long. My 3/4 UQ lives in a plastic zipped "cube" which came with a bed duvet we bought.

I buy the cheapest king size pillow cases from Walmart, fold the edge over & sew a channel, insert draw string and hang in my gear closet.

Ditto. A pillow case works well and is washable.

I've also used a full size mesh laundry bag.

LARGE cotton pillow case with drawstring. i just toggle it up to my closet hanger pole with the drawstring.
