Well here in Scotland it's an essential during midge season, which can be anywhere from early May to late September. I don't mind carrying a bit of extra weight for a peaceful nights sleep. Saying that, I prefer a detachable bugnet like the Warbonnet one, rather than an integrated one, as it means when I'm not needing it I don't need to carry it, and it also lets me use a single layer hammock as it wraps all the way around.

You NEVER need a bug net

until you need one. Better to have and not need........well, you know the quote. As many have said, permethrin is our friend. Great way to deal with the noseeums that sneak inside with you!

I like to spend time on Assateague Island (AKA the "Breeding Ground of Ticks") and there is no substitute for nets and permethrin.

BTW Wise Old Owl....I have outdoor friends on South Valley Road in Paoli.

I'd never consider hammocking without a bug net. It's a great feeling to hear the buzzing outside while you're comfy within.
