Thanks. Now you see the awesomeness of strangely paired mating.

Yeah, I'm a little more comfortable with them sleeping underneath the hammock. As soon as this snow goes away I'm going to start training her to sleep underneath it. Did you have a tough time teaching your dogs how to do it?

I have it tattooed on my arm as a reminder. Right next to my girlfriend's birthday and our anniversary.

We have a 3 year old Jack Russell and a Cairn pup. I let both of them into my hammock in the backyard lab last night. They like to be warm when sleepy and it worked well enough. The rub is that both of these breeds tend to be hyper so the hammock would not work at all times. The thought of taking them (especially the JRT) out into the wild without a leash is daunting. The Cairns tend to be very social and Ceilidh might just adopt some other family. The JRT (Ms Behavin') gets missle lock when hunting and she might disappear on the trail.

I worry about bigger critters snatching my smaller pup up as a tasty treat. My folks (who live in the Sierras -- a place I often go hiking and camping) have mountain lions and bobcats. The other day, a friend of mine in their community had an unfriendly stare-down with a mountain lion. Her two larger dogs finally chased it off, but the lion was not even slightly afraid of her. They are slowing growing less and less afraid of humans. The community has had a few dogs go missing from their back yards, too. I think its because they are getting more hungry, due to less availability of prey.

We are an area with a heavy redneck population (of whom I am a proud member). Where I camp the critters have manners (read act like normal wild animals) or else...if you catch my drift.

    Here is my wife's Chihuahua.

They were introduced to hammock camping at the same time and they both loved it.

    We'll definitely take her again.

Behold as I bring this thread back to life!

I love taking Rex (55lb boxer mix) along on camping trips. He does a great job of setting the pace when we're backpacking and he keeps an ear out for bumps in the night. I don't expect him to protect our campsite, but he gives me enough warning to get up and deal with whatever is lurking around.

He prefers sleeping on the ground near me, but when things get cold he crawls up into the hammock. I then open up my bivy bag and zip it closed with him inside. The two of us stay really warm no matter the weather as long as he's inside with me, but I start to worry when he's outside my bivy and on the ground. It doesn't take much to chill him to the bone.

I'm experimenting with different tarp setups that might better protect him from wind.
