    Winter Down Quilt ?'s

What's the most likely fillpower of my target winter down comforter, anyone wanna venture an educated guess? I remember getting the Winter Down vs. the regular down comforter, I assume it would effect the fill power but I don't know what either would be. We never use it and the ol' lady was about to throw it out I decided I'm gonna save myself the $200+ and use what I already have but everything about this project is new territory for me. Like, how much down will a kingsize comforter get me? Enough for a full UQ? HELP!!!

If she's willing to part with it, probably 550. I scoped some out in the store the other day just because I was there and you can get a quilt with 800fp in it, but they're $300+. My guess, if she's willing to let you hack it, she didn't pay near that for it.

550 is pretty common in stuff like that.

No, I actually bought it about 4 or 5 years ago for around $100. Do you think a king sized comforter would have enough down for an UQ? Do you think it's worth it for 550fp?

you might be able to rig something to use it as is(at least in the backyard, for testing purposes..)
UQ's tend to be length x width x loft/thickness then divide by fill power (if known) to estimate amount of fill needed.
i.e. picking some generous numbers, 40x70x3=8400 cubic inches, so/550 (cubic inches filled per ounce) means you'll need 15-16 oz of down for a decent chance of being warm in the winter with 3 inches of loft underneath you, recalling always that YMMV depending on weather, humidity, metabolism, clothing worn, food eaten recently, etc..KM

I would think that there would be plenty of volume of down in a king size comforter. The only "down side" (sorry) would be the heavy weight due to the low fill power. For comparison, I think kermegan's estimate is good, but I just finished a down UQ that's also 3" thick and the entire thing, including suspension weighs 16 ounces, using 800 fill power down.

Of course, if you are car camping, all this is a non-issue.
Either way, you definitely have yourself a bargain!

Thanks KM, that little doozy there will be the gift that keeps on giving

Appreciate the cuckle MAD Yeah weight's not a huge concern for me. Lug around a 60lb pack for a few months and a 25lb'er will seem like a fannypack. I've actually been makin' cuts in weight where I can to my pack after a recent wilderness trip but I have to be realistic about what I can afford to spend on hobby stuff, for now. It's definitely a bargain worth an extra pound in my pack.. the real question is if I can actually sew it together
