    IX Temperature Rating? 4 layers?

I am curious about temperature ratings for IX under quilts. From sclittlefield's thread on the IX UQ I gather that most folks can get to 32* with three layers. What would a similar IX UQ rate with 4 layers of IX?

Has anyone made a 4 layer IX UQ and field tested in the cold for performance?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Moderators - could you move this thread over to the DIY section?

I think your results are going to vary greatly with how you design it. Results here have varied a good bit, which is often the case with other gear also.

MacEntyre and some others using his products ( with his dif cut design with or without nylon shells) have reported 32F with 2 layers of IX. Others have reported more like high 40s with this 2 layer design. Every thing seems to depend on obtaining and adequate seal on the ends and edges. Actually, there is a thread here some where with folks reporting their results. I think it was Dejoha's thread.

    EDIT: Here 'Ya go:

TeeDee has a DIY design using 3 layers enclosed by nylon shells, with each additional outer layer a bit larger than the previous (closer to the hammock layer) layers. IOW, each layer dif cut). Using a similar design for top and bottom quilt, he (and Tiredfeet) have each reported so far being toasty at 11F. Might it be that 4 layers in this design would take him below zero?

    So, who knows?

Billy Bob - Thanks for the response! Good information in Dehoja's poll you linked to.

I am almost finished with a 4 layer IX UQ (66' x 47") made with darts to create curvature and to allow each layer to be increasing larger and force the layers to separate. I am hoping to get to 20* but based on others results I may be dissapointed... I will post a link in the DIY section when it's complete.
