Late Spring/Early Summer Yosemite Hang!!

Hi Everyone!!

Planning a late spring/early summer Yosemite family trip. Any suggestions of a good campsite for both tent and hammock campers? Or any general Yosemite tips? First time visit!!!

The backpackers site was great when I finished a section of the JMT. Little Yosemite Valley had some nice camping also.

I was there this past summer, No problem hanging. I stayed at the backpacker camp, ten lakes and little Yosemite. You might need some long straps though, there are some big trees there.

Some of the trees are more than 6 ft circumference. If they are 15 ft apart and you start with a 10 ft hammock, that will require your straps to be at least 9 ft long. The 14 ft straps that came with my WBBB would work fine, even if the trees were 10 ft in circumference.

I hope you have a good time. I like staying in Crane Flat to avoid most of the problems with the crowds in the Valley. More campers may mean more loud partiers. Crane offers some respite from most of that.

90% of the car camping will be in huge (or no) trees. Better areas for hammocking while car camping will be Tuolumne Meadows campground or Bridalveil campground. Valley campsites are wide open and full of monster sugar pines.

You'll have better luck backpacking, no issues there. Plenty of trees of all sizes up to around 9,000 - 9,500 feet elevation, sometimes a little higher, but you have to know the area pretty well to be sure of a hang that high. I take 6' straps and 8' whoopie slings, and extra cordage to extend the straps if necessary. Another tactic in monster trees - you can sometimes find a large branch to throw the strap around instead of trying to go round the whole tree (easier with oaks than with pines tho).

Yosemite is a great area with all those massive views. When I lived in California I usually camped at Devils Post Piles as it was less crowded plus they had the hot springs baths
