From what people are posting I think there are 3 options. Please only vote for one and only if you are planning on attending.

as for those up north, i belive we would have to just do two different trips... mabey on the same weekend & both groups give a report when they get back (like jeff suggested).
no way your going to get everybody together for an over nighter ...tim

Yeah, I don't think everyone can get together. I am just looking for a place that as many people as possible can make it. I'm all for having a north/campout.

I vote for RRG, 2 reasons: I have always wanted to go, It's closer to me than MR.

One possible "Hitch in my Giddyup" the boss just fired one of the 24 hr crews (both people) & I may need work their shifts in addition to mine, sigh.

If I can go: I'll have room for 3 more hikers & gear from the Cincinnati area. IF I can go.

I totally forgot about it, but: What about Joyce Kilmer Slick rock wilderness?

Even tho I don't think my vote should count, If the boss fires one more paramedic, I will not have a day off (let alone 4 in a row) for MONTHS. And, it looks iffy for at least 2 of them. WOO HOO, I'll get to work 48+ hour shifts

    Blah!

just got back from mt rogers area.
i couldn`t belive how warm it was. i didn`t check the temp during the day but it had to be close to 65°f. and it only got down to 42 through the night.
needless to say, i had more insulation than i needed.
i got to meet HOI & ewker (probably didn`t spell that right... sorry), nice guys.
and i met a few from the trail talk group (the backpacker)... interresting crew<G>.
it was good to get out, even if the weather wasn`t as cold as expected.
when i got back to the car about 2:30, i decided to take a walk down to wise shelter. it`s been a long time since i was there & i haven`t taken the shorter route in from the parking area in the campground.
it was less than a 40 minute walk down to the shelter.
and yall are right, there are some good looking, clearings w/ plenty of good trees. one spot looks like it could handle 7 or 8 hammocks (mabey more) & has a fire pit in the center... that is if you want a fire that close to those silnylon tarps<g>.
there are a couple creek crossings that could be interresting in really cold weather. ...tim

if you park at the back overnight spot (by the camp grounds) you can get to Wise quickly without any water crossings. It is about a 1 or 1.5 mile hike.

true but one would need to know to walk off trail along a fence or through a zigzag stile instead of crossing the creek to reach the AT - once at the AT there is a bridge toward the FS area with the good hanging sites - when Gemini and I first walked this route we crossed the creek only to find the AT a short distance beyond then we went toward Wise and saw the bridge we could have used if we had known
