    Didn't look like the accident in question was sudden oak death, but some other kind of fungus.

    Sudden oak death, FYI, is pretty easy to spot. The leaves will seem to be turning brown and there will be cankers (weeping fluid, which oak trees do not do normally) on the tree. Google for examples.
