New Twist on a peak bag?

So when I sold my WBBB and switched over to my DIY hammocks I found one of the features I really miss from the WBBB is the gear shelf. That is one handy feature. My DIY hammock is similar to HC4U's HH clone and so it is not made with a shelf. To try and create interior storage that was within reach I decided to make a peak bag. Most of the bags I have seen on here appear to be a conical shaped stuff sack w/ a drawstring closure on the lower end.

What I wanted was the conical shape but a top loader that would prevent gear from spilling out. So that's what I tried to design. The drawstring opening is sort of like a turret on top of the bag. The lower end of the bag is a solid panel shaped kind of like a boat hull. The sides, bottom and top are a one piece "cone" of material with a seam to join them. I made the bag from 1.3 silnylon. The last picture shows my over the shoulder reach into the bag while laying in the hammock. It seems like it will do what I want - but it's still not as good as that shelf on the BB!

That is a great idea. Any chance you could draw up a pattern for it and post it. I think this is an improvement on a good idea. Thanks for posting.

Great idea. Now thats what I call thinking outside of the bag.

Maybe a zipper sewn in the seam of the peak bag would serve a similar purpose and would be easier to design.

Great storage idea and nicely executed!
The only thing I miss about a tent is the storage. Now you have solved that!

I could even see making a 2nd one for my shoes & hanging that at the foot end. It would need to be seam sealed silnylon. With thehelp of a chemical hand warmer pack, that might keep the shoes from freezing so hard in winter.

Nice! Definitely on my list of DIY items. Same thoughts that bottom cinch allow items to spill out.
A pattern to start from would really help allot.

Well done! Really nice work. I don't know much about peak bags, is it also the hammock stuff sack?
    Good luck,

    Nicely done!

I had a similar idea for a peak bag, but never got around to sewing one. But I like your besign better than the one I was contemplating, so I plan on following your lead.

great idea! Like packeagle my first thought was "I wonder if a zipper in the side of a conical stuff-sack wouldn't be easier".

thanks for posting...I'm gonna try this one of these days...

Dave, may I borrow this idea and put one in each end of the Molly Mac Gear Box?

    I love them!
