I have read about the hammock socks, but have not seen pics or know much about them. So what is the sock for. Does it replace an UQ? Or is it extra insulation?

Also.... do a search for the KISS overcover by Grizz. It's not a full-on hammock sock, but looks like a pretty easy DIY project to start with.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
I just got a Molly Max IX-insulated sock for Christmas.
I guess hammock socks are different things to different people.
I wanted one because I had a vivid recollection of winter camping in a bivy tent. With outside temperatures of about -15F, the tent would be closer to zero inside. Contrast this with a similar trip in an 8'x10' tent, which would be pretty much as cold inside, as outside... at least with a single camper. I wanted that kind of micro-climate effect in my hammock setup.
My buddy NFA also purchased a MMG sock, he doesn't own an UQ so he ordered it with multiple layers of IX. This will serve as his bottom insulation, although I suspect in deep winter he'll use a pad as well. I wanted mine to supplement an UQ so I went with a single layer of IX,
I'll be posting more about the sock when I've had a chance to properly test it, unfortunately we have no weather forecasted lower than 20F at night in the immediate future.
this is awesome stuff - we also have a side bar converstation going on within a thread Jeff started http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=25938 this could get pretty interesting and I'm sure the OEM's are paying attention...
god do i love this site....
After I posted, I went to Just Jeffs site, and found what I was looking for. I also was reading the other thread on here.

For those wanting a less expensive alternative, I just finished up an uncoated sock and added it to my site.
CamoSock
1.1 oz. Woodland Camo ripstop nylon
uncoated, very breathable, probably not very windproof
105" x 45"
Weighs 6.10 oz.
Stuff sack included
I'm thinking of building a few socks out of 1.1 or 1.9oz. nylon/polyester.
If there is sufficient interest, I'll add more of these on my site.
