    Jeff's Gear Hammock/ Pack Cover

I'm looking for more pictures of the gear hammock in the pack cover function.

    There are a few here on Joker's pack...it's a kid-sized pack.

It's hanging on my hammock in all the other pics I have.

On my HH in Yosemite here:

    And Big Sur here:

And the original pic from my backyard here:

Not really what you were asking for, but I hope it helps some.

Thanks Jeff. I'm considering this pack cover for the GoLite Quest that is supposedly on its way. I'm thinking the multi use of this could be a good addition to my gear. Seeing it hold water makes me kinda wanna turn it into a water filter adding even more use to it.

EDIT: Do you have a link to the "hikers friend filter" that you mention on your site. I have a Base Camp filter and have seen a diy version useing a Nalgene. I don't think that the normal Nalgene bottle attachment system would work well with the pack cover. Maybe an system like the MSR one would work?

It's funny, I made one and rarely use it as a pack cover or gear hammock. It's been a ground cloth, bucket, firewood carrier, sit sheet, rain hood, and picnic blanket. Also wrapped up wet stuff in it before.

Platypus clean stream could work well with it used in that manner. Just need to find hardware to attach hose to the center of the pack-cover.

Ok so looking over a few of the prior posts on DIY gravity filters. I think if I attach these to the center of the Jeff's Gear Hammock I should be able to cut some weight off of my system.

    Part 1
    Part 2

Then a hose down to a Platy Cleanstream and then to my water container of choice.

This system should not get in the way when used in the pack cover and gear hammock functions. I would remove the hose from the "nipple" on the pack cover. Then put "nipple" side out when used as a gear hammock/ pack cover.

Just thought of a drawback. When used for water filtration and then as a gear hammock residual water would be transfered to my gear. Interesting idea to cut some pack weight but maybe not that effective in practice.

I made three...put up a page on two of them.

    Here's one:

But I'd probably use that design with a smaller inline filter like this:
    http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeGe...itySawyer.html

Then you could hook up the filter when you needed it, rather than keeping the filter permanently attached to the pack cover. I made another bag-type filter using this inline and it works ok. Slightly slower flow rate, though.

Yeah Jeff I was thinking the second. With a platycleanstream inline. It would probably save me 5 oz over my current Katadyn Base Camp filter. Multi use and all. I plan on bringing a pack cover anyway.

Or put "niple" on both sides of the pack cover and use a hiker pro filter.
