    Hammock kids

My son will turn 5 tomorrow and it's time!

I have considered all the options(can't make up my mind) and would like to put him in a hammock with a bug net with zipper/velcro. We will be hanging 3 seasons.

What have you or what would you suggest for a little one with the above criteria? Really looking forward to hanging with him this spring!

Thanks for any and all suggestions......

At that age, it's easy to sleep with a kid in your hammock with you. Mine usually ended up with me anyway.

It's easier for kids that age to get into bottom entry hammocks, and probably safer. Downside is that HHs don't have removable bug nets so you can't reach over and fix their quilts and such unless you put in a zipper.

But top entries are ok, too - mine spent a lot of time in a homemade top entry. I'd try to hang ours side by side so I could help with moisture management throughout the night. That way we could hang under the same tarp, too - definite advantage for kids that age.

I usually used pads for insulation for them, and they never complained about sweat or anything. At the Mt Rogers campout last Jan, my 7yo (now 8) used my insulated hammock.

My 6 year old son sleeps in his hammock when we go camping just fine. He has a top entry ENO and does fine in it. I'm sure that others have had wonderul experiences sleeping the night in a hammock with their kids, but for me it was a bit like trying to take a nap in your dryer. We've napped for an hour or so, but only slept in the hammok an entire night once (And only!).

Gage has been going with me for more than a year now, he will be 5 in January, he uses a top loading Speer homebrew hammock.

The first time I hung his hammock directly above mine. I was scared he would get out at night and not wake me up. I figured if he had to crawl over me I would wake up.

Now I sleep side by side; we use the strut method mostly, as it is usually difficult to find three or four trees perfectly situated for double hang.

Gage's hammock uses the quarter weight bug net design; easy to use, no zippers to foul or velcro to frustrate. The bug net uses larger pockets to stuff with gear to weight it down (instead of quarters). He usually has toy trucks and stuff stowed in the pockets.

He uses a pad, as do I most of the time, his Kelty sleeping bag and we keep chemical warmers for 'just in case'.

With the hammocks slaved together by the strut anytime he gets out I wake up. He is very good not to wander off at night, but I still worry; so either I need to wake up, or he needs a leash!

    Hope this helps!

As an aside: I learned early on that unless he has his 'own' stuff he will bug me relentlessly for mine. So, get them their own multitool, headlamp, sit-pad etc. I buy him the cheaper stuff because he is either going to loose it or tear it up anyway. I also bought him his own digital P&S camera, he loves it (I am a photographer by profession)!

    Okay, I am going now...

Whatever hammock you decide on I would suggest getting the Big Agnes Little Red sleeping bag. Before I got this bag I was putting the pad in the 2 layer hammock and using a quilt style setup. I was not getting any sleep because I was constantly checking to make sure she was still on the pad and covered up. The Big Agnes bag took care of all this. We have slept in the 20's with no problems.

PM me if you need a hammock for an outing. I have some kid's size netless DIY's I made for my daughter that would work well before the bugs come out or you could get an ENO bug net when they do. I am planning on taking my daughter (6 yr old) to the Big South Fork this spring. If your interested we could get a kid's trip worked up for anyone that would like to go.
