Cuben for a Asym Diamond Tarp

Those who know me know I am a gram weenie and I like to use cuben wherever possible. As I put together my new kit for 2011, I'm wondering if it might be feasible to use cuben on my favorite hammock tarp shape, the Asym Diamond.

Would there be any issues with this shape? The biggest issue I can see would be cost as there probably would be a fair amount of wasted material I think. Unfortunately for my wallet, I usually ignore the cost factor when thinking of custom gear so this isn't an issue for me. Would there be any pitch issues or anything, other than cost, I am missing?

You should be good-to-go with that idea. You may also want to get ahold of Joe over at Zpacks.Com and email with him for a bit.

It depends on how strict a gram weenie you are, as far as waste when making a tarp for an asym hammock. There is no waste if you just take a rectangle and hang it on the diagonal from opposite corners. That works pretty well with silnylon that's 65" wide, but cuben is only 54" wide, so an asym rectangle over the hammock is not going to give you much side protection. Still, it would be bigger than the tarps that used to come with Hennessy hammocks.

Yeah David. My thoughts exactly. I'm trying here to break the 5 oz. barrier for a hammock tarp with an 11' long ridge-line. I may just accept another 3 oz. penalty though and go with the MLD Hex Tarp.

Edit: However, I see that Joe Valesko apparently is now making a variety of tarps and he has a 11' x 8.8' x 7' tarp that weighs 5.1 oz. I'll jave to send him an email. It's been awhile since I talked to him anyway.

His 8X8 weighs 4.1 and will save you two stakes.

Yeah but my hammock is longer than 8' so I don't think that will work too well.

If you hang the 8 x 8 diagonally in a diamond shape you'll get an 11.31 foot ridgeline.

I guess basic math isn't so obvious for me, oops.

I've been talking with Joe this morning. It looks like an 11' x 6.5' modified diamond with short beaks on the end, for added rain protection, made out of cuben will weigh right around 3 oz. However, Joe is still using sewn seams so some seam sealer will have to be added making it a tad heavier.

I'm still playing with some ideas...

Yeah but even as a near gram weenie myself... so what if you add another 0.21 grams or so for seam sealing it... your still talking about a hammock tarp that is under 4-oz... that puts it nearly 50% lighter than anything WB has (and well over 50% savings if you don't factor in the most recent WB version) and nothing from OES can even come close to being a 50% savings for the same size tarp. MLD (the unquestionable leader in CF gear) does not even have a sub-5oz hammock tarp.

So, yeah, I think it's safe to say you shouldn't cry too much about having the seam sealer weight to factor in.
