    SpinnTex No Good??

    From thru-hiker:

Product ID: MG139 Category: Kits, Fabric, and Materials-Coated Ripstop
SpinnTex EXP 0.8 oz Silicone Impregnated Ripstop
First Quality SpinnTex™ EXP 0.8 oz silicone impregnated polyester rip stop. Including the silicone impregnation, the weight of this fabric is 0.97 oz/square yard. Sold by the continuous linear yard by 57" roll width. Color: Grey.

10/10/10 Discontinued until further notice: unable to obtain yardage that meets quality standards for hydrostatic head pressure. Consider yourself warned that this is not isolated to Thru-Hiker.

Probably old news to some, but it has me wondering about the spinn tarp i just orderd from oes. i'm NOT questioning his product, nor his material knowledge. It was just a surprise to read this. Spinn seems to somewhat still have a bit of "unknown" about it, as opposed to tried and true sil.

    any ideas, thoughts, knowledge ...............

Bad batches, is bad batches. I doubt there is more to it than that. I've not heard of any, although I'm not in the business, but I bet there have been bad batches of sil delivered too. Difference is there are more factories manufacturing sil than there are Spinn, so the effect of a bad batch of Spinn is likely to carry more impact. Just thinking out loud, but it kind of makes sense to me.

Brian's Graduate School research is focusing on exactly this type of issue on these two materials. If there is anybody that will know if he has a bad batch of Spinn, my money is on Brian at OES over just about anyone. I don't think you have much to worry about.

Though I'd make a post on this. There have been issues in the past with the coating quality, and I do testing on every bolt received to ensure that my tarps remain a quality, waterproof product. I absolutely will not ship a tarp if I feel that the fabric is compromised in any way.

I currently have a backorder on my SpinnUL tarps due to some recent issues, and I am working to ensure that the fabric received matches the properties of those received in the past. I will of course keep all updated on the status of my fabric stocks.

thanks! brian just got back with me too. i have no worries in his fabric knowledge. just surprising to read it.

that makes sense, though. i still feel spinn to be superior to sil, and prefer it when possible.

i tested the last batch of spinn i used (what's in stock now) and it passed my testing, i have heard the rumors about bad batches though, and i do test my fabric before making tarps out of it.

This is probably a lot of what stocks the Walmart $1/yd racks.

Keep in mind also that these fabrics are not produced for the purposes we use them for - they're designed to lower or remove air permeability (sails, parachutes, and the like). That's why, for tarp use, we test them ourselves, or have outside sources run water permeability tests on them for us. All of our 1st quality Silnylon has passed suter testing. We also do not sell seconds if they're deemed seconds due to poor coatings.

Brian- thanks for chiming in. I was the dude that emailed you a few days looking for a tarp to be air FedEx'd (a tarp emergency...imagine that...)

I'll place an order soon and don't mind waiting until you have some fabric that's up to your standards!
