BTW John, I didn't specifically mention it, but I do cat cut my tarps. So even though I consider it a rectangle, it's not straight edged.
The problem with a square is getting it long enough to cover the hammock. If you're planning to pitch it using the corners, than you will be fine. If not, to get a ridgeline long enough, how will you get sides wide enough to make it a square? You would need some really wide fabric to get a 12x12. A 10' ridgeline will absolutely not work for me. I might be able to get by with an 11' ridgeline, but I would be nervous about the hammock getting wet. Maybe an 11' RL with a beak would work, but now you're bringing more elements into the discussion.
