BTW John, I didn't specifically mention it, but I do cat cut my tarps. So even though I consider it a rectangle, it's not straight edged.

The problem with a square is getting it long enough to cover the hammock. If you're planning to pitch it using the corners, than you will be fine. If not, to get a ridgeline long enough, how will you get sides wide enough to make it a square? You would need some really wide fabric to get a 12x12. A 10' ridgeline will absolutely not work for me. I might be able to get by with an 11' ridgeline, but I would be nervous about the hammock getting wet. Maybe an 11' RL with a beak would work, but now you're bringing more elements into the discussion.

Good luck on your tarp. Remember to post the pics.

I use a 9x9- on a diagonal/diamond. Gives me about 12ft. ridgeline. My next tarp (if I buy and not make) will be a 12x12 so I can close it up for winter.

I prefer the rectangular option, but it would be a pig to pitch on the diagonal.

If you want regular and diagonal pitch options a square would be easier i think.

Or bite the bullet, make a hex with cat cuts.......what could possibly go wrong!
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives.
