May I ask where all this money goes? I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I'm just curious. If 100 people donate the minimum of $10 a year, that's $1000 a year. Does it take that much to run a forum of this caliber? Do the mods/admin get paid? If I shouldn't be going there, you can delete this post and I apologise.
My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to print a receipt for my donation.
Money saved (DIY & good advice) + knowledge gained = $10 membership
That's fantastic value if you ask me.
All moderating is done on a strictly volunteer basis. It sometimes takes quite a bit of time and none of us get paid. The donations primarily go towards ops and maintenance of the site...server space, bandwidth, software, etc. We have enough for that, with some left over. We're discussing changing hosts to a dedicated vBulletin server, which will cost more than our current arrangement but will be much more secure and efficient. Those kinds of costs are what we save the "some left over" for.
In the past the money has also gone for small prizes for the members...e.g. for the new motto contest "Elevate Your Perspective" and three runners up.
“Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall when the wise are banished from the public councils because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded because they flatter the people, in order to betray them.” ~Judge Joseph Story

It's only an addiction if you're trying to quit
When I made my donation several months ago I had no idea there was an annual challenge. I just thought I would give a little back for all of the awesome information you folks all furnish here.
Cheers,
Kai
