    Length for FLAT lay DIY?

I know the title looks bad

I can't find my answer soooo...I prefer my BMBH for its flat lay/lie(?) to my former hammock (HH) which I never could get flat enough and I want a very light DIY gathered hammock too. But to be comfortable it NEED a very flat!

I'm just a little over 6'1" and want to know how long the material should be - both total length and between the gather points.

    Thanks in advance!

In a gathered end hammock, both the length and width of the fabric are important. A really comfortable hammock (finished) should be at least 2 feet longer than your are tall, and make sure you use fabric at least 60" wide.

For example, I'm 6'2", and when I make my hammock (still working on getting the funds together), I'm going to get 11.5-12ft of fabric, and 6-10 inches will be used in the gathering. That makes for a hammock about 11 ft long, which should give an extremely flat lay.

I agree. I'm 6'3", and my DIY hammock is over 11.5 feet finished size. I started with 12 feet of raw fabric, hemmed the sides and then folded each end in about an inch to make a channel to cinch the ends up.

It helps to play around with the whipping as well.....
I whipped my DIY 10 or 11 times to get the lay I wanted. Made my foot end real loose on my foot side.

Did you whip the ends 10 or 11 different ways? I don't understand what you would change in whipping the end that would change the way the hammock hangs. Seems like any way the whipping is run, all the fabric is gathered at one spot on the end.

If you look at the directions on JustJeffs Site .... you can pull the ends up or out to loosen the sides of the hammock or to tighten the sides. Or do a "W" whipping style.

Thanks, I knew I had seen that somewhere, but couldn't find it again. I have used the string through the channel method for gathering the end and just couldn't see where the variation was coming from.

You'd be surprised at just how many ways there are to put a string through a channel.

I agree - longer is better & wider is better for a flat lay. There are a few places that sell ripstop in 66" width. If it were me I would start with fabric 66" x 144" hem the edges and gather or whip the ends. You can also play around with your structural ridgeline length for me 108" is the magic number but YMMV.

Good luck and post pictures when you're done.
