Suspension length

Those of you who have extenders or extra long whoopie slings, how high up the tree do you have to set your tree straps. I know with a normal hang (~15ft between trees) straps need to be about 6 ft off the ground. However Knotty mentioned 12' whoopie slings which would give a total tree to tree of somewhere over 30'. Are your tree straps 10' off the ground or am I missing something here?

12' on each end, plus an 8'ish hmmk ridge, = 32'
this isn't even taking into consideration treestraps... which with small trees could add say 4 ft to each side... a 40' hang?! c'mon.

mine are 6' total length adjusted- starting length 12'. this gives me the opportunity to hang at a distance that requires me to get up on a stump to attach my treehuggers.

True, 12' is longer than I've ever needed but it's just the length I happened to make figuring that they can always be shortened but not lengthened.

6' whoopies have left me short or forced me to choose alternate trees too often. Maybe 9' is the magic number.

Whoopieslings.com has them in 6', 8' and 10' lengths. I have 6' and 8'.

I've needed all 11ft of one set of whoopies I made. Sparse, large trees make extra long slings very handy. If both trees are on a bank with a dip in-between, it makes an easy, long hang. I always take an extra long set to parts of Scotland, because I know I'll need it at least once. If I go with someone else, its almost a necessity to avoid one of us having to go to ground, or hanging a long way from my buddy.

I guess I wanted to start that thread because I had seen several people mention their suspension was too long- and I knew that suspension could be shortened, so wanted to start a thread to raise awareness.

As I mentioned, I've had to use 10" on each side in Oregon. The huggers are also a must have for some of the old growth trees here. And I thought everything was bigger in Texas. LOL

Hanging in the east, I use 6' whoopies with 5' tree straps plus I have two 3' continuous loops of amsteel I could use to lengthen the suspension. If needed.

my need for more length has always been in the tree strap arena. i've run into some old oaks here in ohio that would have forced me to go to ground had i not had a length of amsteel extension with 2 fixed eyes to get around the tree.

i agree, it would stink to come up short and not be able to hang

also, important to consider is camping in groups. i like to hang near my buds so we stay in the hmmks as much as possible and still talk to each other. this sometimes poses weird distances as you are forced to now find 2 sets of "perfect trees".

for my money, i plan to stick with my 6 ft. slings. i'll carry a dynaglide or amsteel extender in the case i need to bust a 25+ ft. hang or, more likely, get around that extra large tree. it's a little more versatile in my system than adding length to the whoopie.

this is one of my favorite hmmk hyoh debates. i've heard of some people using 3 or 4ft. whoopies. i guess thats all you need in some instances.
