any reason to keep bottom entry?

is there a really good reason to have a bottom entry sewn up?

The Velcro on my HH Explorer DLX is soooo sticky that it can be difficult to release with my heel. Properly aligned and pressed home it should close tightly and be out-of-sight, out-of-mind. I plan on a #4 mod this year, but mainly for the ventilation when the net is not needed and to access my UQ for adjustment. Being a Certified Big Guy, exiting a side entry hammock can be an entertaining spectacle. I will keep the bottom entry.

Mine too. I kept the bottom opening when I had mod #3 done and I can sleep with the zipper to my left or right. HH uses some industrial strength velcro... I've never even come close to falling through. I haven't used the bottom opening since getting the zipper mod, but I like knowing it's there - just in case.

I have sent my hammock off for a zipper mod. I changed my mind about sewing up the bottom entry - here is part of my email to 2Q&ZQ. "I have a homemade storm shelter that would interfere with your zipper, and also, I very often enter the hammock and reach through the slit to untie my boots. Then I tie the shoestrings onto the ridgeline and let the boots dangle through the slit. This way, the boots don’t get wet and my socks don't get wet in the morning when I exit. Vermin also won't bother my boots if they are hung in this manner."

I kept the bottom slit open but that's just so I have choices. As reliable as zippers are I've always been kind of worried that it might fail on a trip. I figure I don't want to be stuck inside my hammock with a bound zipper. This gives me another way to escape. If the zipper were to jam open or the slider fail I could at least rig the netting closed then enter/exit through the slit until I get home to repair it.

I haven't had any problems with items sticking to the velcro or it coming open so maybe I'm just lucky. However, I did open it all the way and very carefully press the velcro together while sitting inside. This might help with any gaps or other problems.

That's some good info in the other posts. I've been looking for something good to do with my boots (other than a dedicated bag).

hmmm...i'm not sure i'm convinced yet. anybody have any better reasons?

JK...thanks for all the help. hammock is on it's way and i will not be having the slit removed.

Some advantages of the HH bottom entry:

I like being able to sit up and dress or undress to warmer clothes, inside.

Not being showered with ice crystals.

My over cover and undercover always have the right position.

In the summer, bugs don't seem to be able to get in during entry and exit.

Plus, I don't loose all the inside warmth when getting up at night. Which is a lot. (the warmth I mean)

I have partially slid out while sleeping because of my quilt keeping the velcro opening partially un-joined, but, after a couple of times now always make sure there is nothing preventing it from being completely secure. I have a DIY insulated overcover.
