    fixing cord stretch

    Hello!

I recently got some 3/4" webbing (rated at 900 lbs) and 4mm line (rated at 700 lbs) to use in an integrated-ridgeline suspension (pics soon). the first, and only, time I set it up I had a problem with both the line and webbing stretching. I ended up having to pull it all really tight and set the tree-huggers a little over my head. Does the rope "set" after a while? will it eventually stretch less after I hang on it for hours? or will it always be this elastic?

Sounds like you got nylon. If so, it will always be elastic.

What you want to use is either polyester or polypropylene webbing and a Dyneema cord, such as Amsteel Blue.

I believe it is nylon, yes. Will it eventually stretch a bit less? it hasn't ever really had any load on it, except for the 20 minutes I was playing with it the other day.

It will continue to stretch, I'd recommend getting some polyester straps and poly rope. Some of the vendors here supply the right stuff.
You can also pick up these items at your local hardware store.

    JerryW gave good advice.

These guys are almost right. It will stretch but it will eventually stop stretching. Bad news is it stops stretching because it fails.

Just to clarify this a bit: Nylon will stretch under load and will return to near initial length after the load is removed - Elastic Recoil

Over many repetitions of loading and unloading, which causes tears in the micro-fibrils, the nylon will elongate further and eventually fail.

Unless you're giving the straps real dynamic loading (jumping in your hammock), they should last a long time.

That being said, get rid of them for all the reasons listed by previous posters

I think the safe working load is 30% of the tested strength so your rope is rated at 700 lbs which put the safe working load at about 210 lbs. That maybe fine but if the hammock is set up closer to horizontal, then the force increases dramatically.
It may mean shelling out some money but getting some polyester webbing and amsteel is definitely worth looking into.
