"Lighten your load" Hammock Forums video

I was thinking that we should have a video about how to lighten our load while camping. We could use this thread as a way to discuss all the things we can do to make our hiking trips lighter and easier. Then once we have a pretty good outline on how to get a nice light pack, we make a video. Let me know what you guys think. I hope this takes off because I know all the noobs and even some of the pros could take advantage of the information.

We have some good threads on lightweight hammocking. If we structure a video like the "Lighten Up!" video, maybe we could follow three backpackers down the trail, each with a different type of lightweight setup:

    1. Ultralight (e.g. Sgt. Rock) - Minimal hammock (GT Nano), IX or summer down UQ, cuben or asym tarp, whoopies, toggles
    2. Lightweight - basic hammock (ENO, GT, Traveler, etc.), add-on bug net, silnylon tarp, whoopie slings, Dutch clips, webbing, etc.
    3. Traditional - package setup - Hennessy/Blackbird/Clark Jungle, etc. - stock rope or webbing, carabiners, hex tarp, 3/4 or full-length down UQ,

None of these set-ups would be a negative, but you could compare or contrast pros/cons or ways to lighten up based on style and preference.

That's a great idea. We could still make a nice 30 min video by breaking it up into 3 parts as well. Also, this would apply to everyone because a person's gear is always differs. I think we should make it for 3 seasonal too. Because winter camping is just really hard to make a lightweight experience.

OH, PLEASE!!! 30 minutes isn't long enough...I've practically worn out my Lighten Up DVD.

I do a lot of amchair hiking/camping/hammocking, so need more to watch.

Dare I say that this could be a fundraiser for HF?????

First we need to determine what a light hammocker is. I don't feel that a light hiker and a light hammocker are the same thing. Granted both are walking in the woods but one sleeps better at night.

I have been wanting to do several "how to" videos. But I don't have a video camera and I have never made a video. But the first one was going to be "whats in my pack." I consider myself and U.L. hiker/hammocker. The next series of videos was going to be "why the gear that is in me pack" and how and why I use it.

I am game if some are willing to help me work out the videoagraphy of things.
I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.

See I think its almost impossible for a hammock camper to be an UL hiker. We are a lazy bunch by definition, let me explain. The question by most groundies is why a hammock. Cause you sleep better at night of course every hammocker knows that. So right there we are choosing comfort over weight i.e. hammock at (whatever yours weighs in at) tarp, suspension, snakeskins, bb bag, peak bag, gear hammock etc. compared to 1/4 foam pad and tarp. So it stands to reason that we will of course bring on other comforts cause that's just how we roll. Not to say it's impossible to go UL as some here have but I know i am un-willing to give up my head lamp for a pocket led or my thermarest stuff sack with fleece lining (hammock pillow) for a sil bag of half the weight.

Definitely see your point. You can get a sub-5 base for summertime weights, though...which "qualifies" for SUL.

But definitions aside, I agree with you. I guess we should call ourselves "supercomfortweight hikers."

    Supercomfortweight... I like it.

We carry a balance of gear that's light enough to be easy on us during the day, and comfortable enough to be easy on us at night.

    light is not always right.

i believe that smaller is better. that way the load can be carried easier and thus making the load seem lighter than it is.

the video is a great idea and if i can help out contact me
