It's really the force of the lark's head sinching down on the hammock as well as the whipping that holds the ridge line secrue. The knot helps keep everything in place. I have been using this method with the ridge line thingie for a long time and I have never had the slightest indication of the knots trying to pull through the whipping

Yeah I was a little leery of it at first, but it is pretty solid. I actually cut my line a little bit too short so I didn't have enough left to tie a double knot on the outside of one end (using 7/64" amsteel). Was kind of worried about it slipping through, but it is holding every bit as well as the other end with a double knot.

Reviving this thread from the past..... Could I sew a channel in the end of my Speer to use this same whipping method? And if so, would it get the lay similar to my BB?

It would be similar, yes, very close to the Traveler.

What are the dimensions of the Speer?

Mine is 120"x58" 2.5 Supplex. What do you think?

It's 6" narrower, so it won't allow quite as much diagonal, but it might be worth a shot if you're looking for a 'project' to tinker with.

The channel on the end need not be large.

Yeah, it's a project, just trying to learn what I can. I'm also assuming that a single stitch will be ok too? Since the seam wont be load bearing, just to hold the whipping line, and the suspension will be larksheaded on the backside of the fabric knot?

I might add a ridgeline as well. Is there any reason not to just run the line thru the end and tie it off around the whipping? Instead of using the double knot style?
