There are several good methods of tarp tensioners, but my favorite is the headchange4u method. I think it's the least costly and the easiest to make. I have shock cord laying around at all times. The last set I mad was from 3/16" shock cord (I had it on hand), which is too big. It really turns the tie out into a stake launcher if I'm not very careful. When I get some smaller shock cord, I'm going to change them out.

Sometimes I loop it/ double it like in the post below. Others I have just tied clove hitches on each end of the shock cord.

Congrats on the wise decision- "bailing" is always an option! (Just, most folks think of it as losing out on their trip, and not that they are saving their skins!)

as an aside- My current tarp tensioners are just shock cord tied to two "alpine butterfly" knots I made in the guy lines, with the shock cord being somewhat shorter than the distance between the knots.. quick to do and easy to undo if needed.

Great report---------thanks for your honesty! I just about froze to death my first hammock trip-------trust me, if theres a mistake to make in hammock camping , Ive done it at one time or another! Theres always next time!
