    DIY Winter UQ

I am finally getting around to posting about my UQ that I finished over the Christmas break. I ordered materials (12 oz. of speer 900 fp down and 3 yards of black momentum), last winter and started seriously planning after I finished my tarp. I have been using a pad and figured the tarp was the most crucial piece of gear.

I owe credit to members of this forum including Dalton and StormCrow for inspiring my design. My final dimensions are about 51" x 45" and baffle height was about 3.5". I used seven baffles to make eight chambers and each chamber is darted 1.5", therefore the ends taper to about 33" wide. The outer shell is differentially cut. Nothing really new here. I have some pictures of the final product and one when I was marking the fabric.

I tried it out for a little while, today, and the temperature was in the upper 30s. Without any other pads or topquilt, I was quite comfortable laying there. My back actually started getting itchy from being so warm in the dry air.

I may sleep in it tonight, but the temps are supposed to hit 5 degrees by 6 am, in ALABAMA, so I haven't decided. My topquilt is a 15 degree mummy style sleeping bag. I may see how long I can go.

shevy77, you have done an excellent job!
I just made one with 8 oz of 800 FP down and am confident it will take to to 10 degrees.
I think that you are ready for anything!!

Looking forward to your test result!

Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Great looking quilt! Nice work. The pre-cut marking is very impressive . What did you use to mark the momentum?

I have used both a standard fabric pencil and soapstone to mark Momentum. Both work. Soapstone works a little better.
