You all think this would work for a DIY GE Hammock. how wide should i make it? Im 5'5 165lbs, 32 inch waste. would 5 feet wide be wide enough?? (I dont have a sewing machine, so the less sewing the better!)

It would work. 60" is pretty much the standard width for most gathered end hammocks. You might consider taking the fabric to a local tailor/alterations person or upholstery place and seeing if they'd run a hem down the sides for you. Wouldn't take them long at all, but it's not necessary.
If you go in and buy something small, they'll give you a flier that usually has a 40% or 50% off coupon. I went in last night and got some thread, and got a 40% one.

yeah i have a local dry cleaner that loves me. Being that im 5'5 would a 10fter be good length, or maybe even 9?
I'm 6', and have found that the longer the hammock, the more comfortable it is... THere is a point of dimished returns here, but having used a 9', 10' and 11' hammock, my 11' one is the most comfy. I'd go at least 10' maybe even start with 10'6" raw fabric... Unless you're trying to go ultralight, or with a smaller tarp.. But that's just me...
My first hammock was a 9-footer, but I think you'd be happier with at least 10'.

I am 5' 9" and have used both 9' (current) and 10'. I am just as comfortable in both. But go with longer, you could always whip the end and make it shorter, but can't stretch it!
5' wide is fine for the width.
I agree with the idea of starting long and then shortening as needed.

yeah i think im gonna start with 11 ft of raw then hem and whip..... just gotta find someone to sew, prob just take it to my dry cleater. is there a special thread i need to use?
just avoid the cotton thread is the main thing.
If you get a seamstress to do it for you, the brand may not matter. This forum recommends Guttermans polyester thread. I bough Coats and Clark polyester because it was all I could find. I sewed one inch four times. Each time my machine jammed.
A week later I tried Gutterman's and all was good. I do not know if it was the thread or if I was holding my mouth right that time, but it worked.
