Pad... in or out of footbox

when i use my 3s Phoenix I have tried putting my footpad inside my quilt's footbox and outside. I like it inside because I am less prone to slide off of it, but I was wondering if there are specific reasons why inside is better than outside or vice versa...
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I have not lived.

IMHO its a matter of preference. I have tried it both ways with my gossamer gear pad and I personally like it in between the layers of my dbl Black Bird and Traveler but know my buddy Greenlespaul prefers it inside his foot box. For me the pad in the foot box just did not feel right, did not allow me to lay in the TQ the way I wanted to. I say try it out numerous ways and find one that works for you. Also a good excuse to sleep in your hammock more. Have fun experimenting

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

I would think from an insulation compression perspective that inside would be better.

With the pad beneath the bag, your legs/feet will be compressing the bad directly under them leaving basically just the pad to insulate. In effect creating a cold spot in your bag in the only spot you really need it.

The pad inside should distribute the weight of your feet/legs across its surface to some degree and therefore spread the compression of the bag so there is at least some bag insulation occurring in addition to the pad.

    That's my thinking anyway.

like others have said it comes down to what you like best
like my friend LLR said i like mine inside my TQ ...i find it's less work to keep it under your feet...
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I tried my small foot box pad between the bottom layers of my wbbb an found it hard to position. I now have it inside the hammock with my SB laying on top. Much easier to adjust and re adjust.

Since my pad is between the 2 layers of my BB I do not have a choice but even if I did I could not do it as I turn too much while sleeping.

I've tried Inside and outside my UQ (my hammock is a single layer)

Though outside my UQ was more comfortable, it was more effort as I shuffled through the night to keep it under my feet.

Inside the UQ, I had one issue where I got a bit warm... using a reflectix pad I had some dampness below my calves, but I was only wearing shorts...

For now, my preference is inside...

If i have a small pad, it goes in the footbox. If I use my JRB torso pad. It goes outside. It's a question of space. If my JRB torso pad is outside, I can also fold it if needed to provide more insulation.
I don't think the pad police will enforce it either way, hyoh.
