A down UQ won't work well under a SS because the SS undercover will compress the down too much. There's not a lot of space between the SS undercover and the hammock. I used a synthetic KAQ with my SS recently and even with a space blanket over the KAQ it still got soaked with condensation but it was a VERY humid night with temps rising from below to over freezing during the night with rain. Others have good success with this combo.

Thanks, Knotty. I didn't realize the SS compressed the UQ so much. It seems like it has a lot of give. I'll just stick with the OCF pad and space blanket. Now for a good top quilt. That's what I need. Maybe I'll wait and see how much the new TQ from Arrowhead is gonna cost. They seem really reasonable. I really liked the new UQ. The Flamethrower line. $175 seemed like a good price for the UQ. I'm waiting to see what the price is on the TQ. Hopefully they'll offer it with the over stuffed option like the other one they offer. Down or synthetic. it doesn't matter much to me as I don't attempt temps much below freezing unless by accident.

I do not think there is any problem using the SS with a down UQ space wise, when used on a WBBB. Take the shock cord at the bottom entry on the SS, loosen it at one end by tying a string onto the shock cord and adjust it as needed.

    BlazeAway,
Having the 2QZQ-#2 mod on my HH, that sounds like an excellent idea!

i'm planning to do exactly this. i don't like the hh ss pad - it works, but it looks like it will disintegrate pretty soon. i don't like the idea of ordering new ones indefinitly & is too bulky for what it is. that packing space would be better utilized by a down 3s uq, i just don't know which one yet (since i want it to be interchangeable between the wbbb and the hh survivor). since i already have the hh ss uc - which i like - buying a weather shield seems wasteful. blazeaway showed us his layering order which seems the most sane so far to me:

    - hammock
    - space blanket
    - extra random insulation layers (any pads, wool blankets, ix, whatever) this is where we can be creative
    - down uq
    - hh ss uc or any other weather shield

CryoftheWild, have you ever used the Neo air upside down? If so, did it work just as well?

Haven't had the chance yet to really test it. Some one said they would half inflate it. Their butt would squash it in the middle and they'd get a cold backside.

I agree with BlazeAway. I used the SS undercover over my Yeti and WBBB this past January as in attempt to snug up the Yeti to stay warmer. I also had a torso length CCF in the double bottom of the BB. It worked like a charm. I didn't need to use any clips to close the slit entry on the SS because the velcro kept it closed. I also didn't need any extra string on the ends to hang it. I just left the toggles open and simply looped the SS shockcord over the BB bundle on each end. Genius I say!
