The basic principle is that of a button in a button hole.

The diamond knot (button) at one end is placed in a loop (button hole) at the other end. When tension is applied the loop chokes the base of the knot.

There are various methods of construction aimed at providing ways to help reduce the size of the loop after the knot is inserted. In practice, I'm not sure the loop needs to be secured by other means in order to hold load but it's helpful to keep the knot from slipping out when no load is applied.

    Answer: Everywhere!

You can make light duty ones out of Zing-It or heavy duty ones from Amsteel 7/64 or 1/8.

The Nacrabiner knot/loop design is how I finish-off my Paracord Survival bracelets.
