    winter insulation

I have a JRB no snivler that I use along with the JRB weathersheild for underquilt, which tends to be fine into the 20's. But I use a bulky Western Mountaineering mummy for my top. Any recommendations on quilts that might save me some weight on winter trips?

JRB, Warbonnet, and HammockGear all make great top quilts. Take a look and pick the best one which matches your budget, weight, and specs.

from what i have read here, you can't go wrong with any of the three recommended. I chose Hammock Gear for myself.

If you think of saving weight as applied to everything carried on your backpacking trip (not just the quilt) it's hard to beat Jacks R Better's idea of a wearable quilt. There's your camp jacket and top quilt all in one package.

You could consider using your no sniveler as a top quilt and get a JRB Mount Washington 3 Convertible (MW3C) as an underquilt. The MW3C work well in the summer in 2/3 mode and when it gets colder attach it's companion. You then can add more warm clothing a to extend the range of your TQ. If you wanted to go colder you can supplement the UQ with a pad and get yourself a proper winter quilt. I've gotten to -1F this way and I was plenty warm. Here is a thread I did on my testing; http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=25604

    Good luck!
