I am thinking of making my own gathered end hammock. I am 280lbs and was wondering which fabric I should use. Also where to find it.

I am 200 pounds and use a single layer of 1.1 ounce nylon. That said, lots of people at my weight and lighter find 1.1 ounce to be too stretchy. I would say it depends a lot on whether you're trying to go really light or not. If not, I would say that you would get a flatter lay with the heavier nylon.
If you're going for a double layer, I think you should be fine with lighter nylon, maybe 1.1 ounce, if not, I would go with heavier, 1.9 perhaps.
I don't have much of any experience with other fabrics, but I am sure others will chime in. Hopefully someone closer to your weight as well because I am only basing what I've said on my experiences.
Good luck and post pictures when it's done!

Oops, didn't see this part. I got mine from Scott at backwoodsdaydreamer.com. Great service and some of the best prices I found.

yea same here for BWDD, he is the best... unbeatable prices and quality service. As for fabric, i would go with 1.9 oz ripstop, and like what cold butt said, if you have no need for an epic lightweight hammock, go with a double layer. Double layers are way stronger, and are more durable and versatile for bottom insulation capabilities. I would go for a double layer of 1.9, and you would be absolutely sure that thing would be bomb-proof!
Thanks,
Dan

Here's another happy fabric customer of Scott at BWDD! He is now carrying a 1.5 oz ripstop in foliage grey that would make a great double layer for your weight. I am 260# and I use a 1.9 oz single layer w/ no worries, so Dan is correct a double layer 1.9 would be just about bomb proof.
I am looking for fabric too - checked the site, and did not see 1.9 there - I am am about 200, and wanted to have a little extra room if one of my little ones wanted to join. Thoughts?
I use a single layer 1.1 and it works great for me at the same weight as you. That said, I think I am going to make a double layer 1.1 to old a pad still for my next hammock. If you do a DL 1.1, it will easily be strong enough for you and your kids. If you only want to do SL, I would say that 1.5 ounce on there would be great for extra peace of mind.

I've made hammocks from 1.1 (single from BWDD) and 1.9.
I really like the feel of the 1.1 fabric from scott... A double layer of that is my vote. It's reasonable from a weight perspective, and gives you insulation options.
