    Hanger Envy

Hello hangers! I am relatively new to backpacking and hammocking, though I went camping a lot as a kid. I am a redditor and found this site and others through the /r/hammocks. It didn't take me long to get hooked on hammocks and ultralight backpacking and I have mostly been reading up on all the DIY info and watching some great videos from Shug and Grizz. I am amazed at what this community has done in terms of refining the hammock into what seems a truly efficient sleep system. I try to be frugal when possible and am wondering the best way to get into all this for minimal cost. I have basically no gear so I think that I'm in a good situation to just start lightweight. Is it worth it to find a sewing machine and jump into DIY projects instead of buying expensive gear?

Welcome. There is a lot to explore here. Weigh your options regarding buying versus DIY. You can buy cheap and then do DIY from there or dive right in. Enjoy!

    Welcome to the madness.

Try and find a group hang you can attend and check out the variety of grear being used to try and get an idea of what might work for you. I am in the process of teaching myself how to sew (after watching Rev's videos) and making some DIY gear.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

IMO DIY is not a good way to _save money_ in putting together gear. Particularly after you have to buy the equipment. That bing said... DIY _is_ good way to get excatly what you want. The ultra-lightweight approach mends itself to DIY because so many people do mods on their stuff anyway. But the learning curve can be pretty steep.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
