can anyone tell me if th nylon fly from a tent would work for a under quilt
underquilts are insulated. they have some form of material that keeps you warm. weather it be down or synthetic, it retains heat. You might be thinking of a weathershield. for that, it may work, try and post pics.
Like skar578 said, it wouldn't be that much insulation value. I would work well as a wind blocking layer.

Generally want breathable material, and tent rainflies usually aren't breathable. If you had a way for the air to be squeezed out of it when you pack, and get back in when you set it out to loft, you might be able to make it work.

If you have insulation between your body and the outer shell, the insulation will soak up all the moisture and lose its loft. If you're gonna use it, put it against the body (hopefully with some moisture wicking clothing or hammock material in between) so it protects the insulation. Or just get some $1/yd breathable stuff.

yes, if it's going to be non breathable, use it for both the inner and outer shell to keep the insulation dry from both sides. it's definately handy to have a shell that won't get wet. might be hard to do with down though, but probably possible, just need some means of opening up to dry the inside if it ever gets wet in there. this would allow air to be squeezed out easily for packing, and just the opposite for self inflation. i don't believe anyone has made a down uq from sil yet, but i've done it with synthetic and it made a very good uq.
I was thinking of synthetic anyway so far I don't sew. I have help in that THANK GOD for MOM
