    question on bugnets

Hey all, this might be a dumb question.... But here goes. I notice that on some hammocks the bugnets drape all around the hammock... some zip in creating a seal with the hammock on all sides so velcro & some with tie downs. My favorite was HC4Us designed where it zips on all sides, that seems that it would provide the best protection, perhaps with the negative effect of limiting mobility some. My question is, s the nylon thin enough that you may risk being bitten thru the nylon bottom of the hammock?

Some people have reported being bitten through the hammock material. You can treat the material Permathin (?sp) to repel bugs. I almost always use some type of under quilt so I have never had a problem with being bitten.

yes the nylon is thin enough. but if you use a pad or underquilt it will be harder for the mosquitoes to bite through the multiple layers.

also, a weathershield works like a quilt for bug protection, but there is dead air instead of insulation.

permathin (whatever its called) is another good way, ed speer uses this too.
I like it so bugs cant bite through and ruin the material anyway.

Love Permethrin! Hanging if Florida means bugs; really big-nasty-ugly bugs! I don't go anywhere without a treated hammock. Reapply every 4-6 weeks and never worry about a bug again.

Thanks guys! Do you all who camp in weather ranging from 60-75ish use a pad or thin quilt when you hang?

I don't need anything under me until I hit about 65F. Most people are not comfortable without bottom isulation below 70F.

    Hi all,

what do most of you end up using for a bug net? is there a retail product or is it a home made effort?

I would assume there is something available made from no-see-um?

    Cheers

Just a not on Permethrin, it is really great stuff! But, make sure you only put it on your gear, it is not meant to go on you and the label will tell you this.

There are a couple of commercial options, like the ENO Guardian and Mountain Laurel Designs bug net tube. Lots of homemade ways...I posted a few of them here.
