Colorado Winter Hang 2011, Rampart Reservoir, 14-16 Jan

The hang was awesome! I think the total was 15 folks on Saturday night, with a few showing up Friday night. I didn't hear of anyone with a thermometer, but I think Saturday's low was about 15F. Many of us didn't even put up our tarps! It was in the 40s during the days, which is a great temp for standing around the fire and getting to know each other.

    (Did I forget anybody?)

The reservoir wasn't completely frozen, which made for some good pics. A couple day hikes, great food, better company.

Pics to follow (OutandBack already posted one on the planning thread).

It was great to see everyone, and I can't wait to do it again! I did take some pictures, but they were on a phone and didn't come out great, so I will defer to those who had actual cameras.

The food was amazing, and thanks to everyone for providing such good stuff for the pot luck dinner. I brought a whole pile of mountain house meals, and ended up not using a single one, as there was so much extra food that I had plenty to keep me going. An extra special thanks to OutAndBack for pulking in some firewood, and all of the other guys who ventured off into the woods to bring us more firewood, and saw and chop it into submission.

I did try some fishing with my super collapsible setup, but came away empty handed. Maybe next time.

The temps were generally mild, except when the wind would start kicking. Over night, I had my DIY down UQ, and a mont bell 15 degree down hugger sleeping bag. I got so overheated that I stripped down to boxers, which made it a real pain when I had to get re-dressed when nature called. On the flip side, trying to fish down by the lake when it was 20f, with the wind making casting a challenge and my line constantly icing up, was pretty dang cold. I returned to camp with no fish and ready for breakfast when I stopped feeling my toes.

The number of warbonnet hammocks represented at the hang was ridiculous. It was a veritable flock of Blackbirds!

I'd still be interesting in seeing what you took with your phone. I forgot my camera as well...

I'll upload those when Erik emails me the pics he took.

I had a super great time.
Met some of the nicest peeps you'd ever want to camp/hang with.

All of the equipment and techniques I learned about on HF.net performed flawlessly.
Had two of the best night sleeps I can remember. Thank you warbonnetguy, stormcrow, and OES.

A big thanks to food for serving us some very taste tamales.
A big thanks to edbeteze and Bubbyman for make the drive up from NM and bringing the best greenchilli stew and baked apples I have ever tasted. ed, I sure enjoyed
our conversation around the campfire Saturday nite.

As the last person to leave camp, I'm kinda slow, I looked around to police the area (old boyscout habit) and just smiled. You could not tell we had even been there.

I am really looking forward to the next group hang.

The hang was about as much fun as you can have with your pants on.

But why was Just Jeff not wearing pants?

Nice pictures OutAndBack. Nice Place & fine weather. I can't believe you guys got out so light there in CO.

This looks like a picture of a redneck sled I once had... a folded blanket to lean back against & a stick for a steering wheel.
And if you don't have a front bumper, just put a couple jugs of sweet tea in front of your feet
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Just started a thread in the Cutlery forum about the Sabercut saw we used for the firewood. I just got one for $32 shipped from eBay.

Not necessary for a little woodburning stove, but definitely worth the 6 oz if you're gonna need a substantial fire, IMO.

    I didn't take any pictures.
It was a good time! The food was fantastic and the weather far too warm. At least I got a boo-boo on my finger; not a party till someone is bleeding.
    Trust nobody!
