HH SS IX mod to foam pad

just wondering if this has any merit. i'm fine down to 20/25F with mine and with proper shelter building, like paying attention to wind, large tarp and building up the snow to basically make an igloo with a tarp roof i've slept fine to 0F. i'm wondering what temps the SS would be good to if a layer of IX was sewn to the bottom or top side of the foam pad - maybe another 2QZQ mod?

That's in interesting question. I'm thinkin' it would suit best to be added to the top of the pad. If you do this, please share. I may consider this in the very near future myself!

I can't imagine that it would do anything but increase the thermal insulation, either placed on top or below.... It would be worth trying without doing any sewing on the first attempt.

So who goes first?? *Fist Pump..Fist Pump..Paper*

If you can mod it so that 1 layer is hanging just barely a smidgen loose below the OCF pad, with that small air gap after you are in, I suspect you would add a good 15*F or so to the insulation( just my guess). Plus, pick up some additional wind proofing maybe, though the HHSSUC and space blanket should already be providing a good bit of that.

i'm in the process of making a sock and if i've got some scraps left over i'm giong to cobble something together. I may just have to order a few more yards or possible take a trip to ikea or home depot in search of the PE foam Mac is switching to. what's good for the board should be good for this project.

Folks have rigged a Universal IX UQ to supplement the SS. I recommend putting it below the OCF pad because things tend to fit better that way. It should add 15-20*F to the rating.
