    White Mountains NH Jan 22nd

I am planning to hang at Hancock CG or Barnes CG in the White Mountains this weekend.

The expected overnight low for that area of New Hampshire is minus 22 deg F.

After easy day hike in the area, I am going to hang at one of these campground so that I will have the car as a back-up plan as I test all my gear.

    Company is welcome.

If I wasn't so far away I'd love to. Been keeping my eyes open for a White Mountains Hang actually. Next winter I'm hoping to do the technical climb of Mt. Washington. The Most Wicked Weather on Earth... literally.

    Have FUN!

You should check out the hiking blog: sectionhiker.com

Phil has two posts detailing his Mt Washington Winter Ascents: one this year and another one a year or two ago.

    Good luck.

Darn... I just got back from a business trip and I'm heading to the NJ hang later this month so I can't be away this weekend as well. Well, maybe if I had more notice of this, I'd be there. I used to live in NH and have hiked about 30 of the 48 4000' peaks. Just beautiful scenery up there. Good luck on the trip and we need pics and a report.

I love winter camping in the Whites! However, minus 22 is serious stuff. Hanging by your car is a good idea until you work out any bugs. In addition to the obvious need for warm clothes, wear goggles. And don't forget the hot water bottle. Also, eat high calorie food just before bedtime ... cheese

I wish I was there with you!

I am planning to drive up from central MA to be at the Lincoln Woods TH on the Kanc by around 9 am.

I will do a snowshoe with my pulk and gear along the Lincoln Woods Trail or the Eastside Trail. Neither trail has any significant elevation gain.

I have no idea how far I will get on the trail; getting a better feel for that is one of the purposes of the trip.

Ideally I would stop at noon, melt some snow, make a hot lunch, and turn back so that I am setting up at the campground by around 3-4.

If I am feeling good in the morning I am going to repeat the gear/pulk hike but I could just bail out .....

Looks like a long drive for you but when I looked at Grafton Notch SP, which seems in a mid point between our locations, the trails have a lot of elevation gain and it isn't clear that we can camp at the trailhead.

Another spot that might work for me in late Feb / early March is Blackwoods CG in Acadia at the southern foot of Cadilliac Mountain. I would have to get some time off from work & permission from the Mrs. so that I could go for a 3 (or 4) days in order to justify the driving time [5-6 hours each way].

Agreed. Thanks for not making me feel overly cautious.

My experience is that once you hit freezing every additional 10 degrees F is a "step change" and each "step" is tougher than the last [hope that makes sense].

I have tent camped down to about -5 deg F at a backcountry sites. I have hammocked in the backyard this winter down to about 10 deg F.

I am setting up my tent as the first back-up plan and the car is the second.

I could end up in the car driving to a Dunkin Donuts at one in the morning.

Yeah, Dunkin D. is right there in Lincoln, near I-93.

Cadillac Mtn in Acadia is another awesome spot!!

The Lincoln Woods trail would be a bit more of a haul for me. The site up by Gorham is more of a "straight shot", since I live right near Hwy 2. Would only be about $30 for gas and no toll roads...

I'm going to think about it, I'll post back within a day with a yes or no on heading out there.
