Hammock Lengths - Shorten or leave as is for kids?

Having two kids under 10, and dreaming of thawing snow and green trees in the mountains - I am looking at making hammocks for my kids. Seeing that most designs are starting off with approx 3.5yds, I question how this will feel to someone smaller? If made one, what was the rough/finished length. Was it worth the trouble?

This is with the assumption that mostly these will be a gathered-end hammock - no need for a footbox at this point

I say make it full length. The kids will grow into it (faster than we think) and you will have a couple full size hammocks to use as loaners for friends.

On my nephew's 8th birthday I made him a hammock (he was always procuring mine). It was made with 3.5yds of fabric. Fits nice now and he can still grow into it.

My son is ten and his hammock is 3yds. He could certainly enjoy a shorter one but he doesn't want a smaller one.

Whether its the "yard" hammock, or test firing the diy stuff, my kids always wanna have in on the action. Think of a full size for them as a jumbo for you. They seem to be real comfy where I have just enough room too.

x2 on the keep it. My daughter inherited my first DIY (9') and it's great. She's grown 6" since I gave it to her. I'm glad I didn't shorten it.

One more vote for the full size here as well. Gage has always slept in a full sized hammock - never heard a complaint.

My 6 yr old slept in one of my 12'ers over Christmas break. He seemed happy and it fit comfortably in his room
