    Noob in Austin

Well, after HOURS of lurking I thought I would post up. I'm mainly a mountain bike racer/tourer and road tourer. I've been using tents/bivy's for years. I've always known about the hammocks but was skeptical of them. Anyway, I'm racing the Colorado Trail Race this summer and am looking to increase my comfort level. That being said, is there any person in Austin that is a hanger? I'd love to get some advice and maybe test out some equipment/learn. I'm not scared to take on some DIY projects as I have some time until my big trips are coming up.
Also, I have a lot of sleeping bags, I think I read somewhere that people modify them to quilts? I have down and synthetic. Where could I go to learn more about that?
    Thanks!
    Travis

    Welcome!

There are a few threads here about converting bags to quilts. Basically, just cut off the zipper and hood, then trim the width. Easy...do a quick search.

Check the google map on the front page to see who's near you. Not every member is on the map, and most folks are along the AT, but you might find some folks close enough for weekend trips. There was a recent one a bit north of you.

From one Texan to another...welcome sperpaxc! (I'm about 30 miles north of Houston)

I'm fairly new here, too. Mostly lurk about the place and learn a great deal.

I recently purchased a couple of mummy bags from Gander Mntn and converted one to an underquilt. See the thread listed below. I posted pictures on page 2.

Where are you located Alan? I grew up in Conroe and still have family in the area.

Hey, sherpa, I'm in northwest Austin and have a ridiculous amount of hammock stuff..... I have several commercial hammocks and many diy hammocks you could try out. Unfortunately, my free time is a bit tight right now, but I'm sure we could figure something out to introduce you to the wonderful world of hanging.

Sherpa, I am just North of Austin, in Bertram. I have tons-o-hammock stuff as well. I head out most weekends and you are welcome to come along on any of them, I will post up here when I go next.

I am planning on heading out to Granger WMA in a few days to hunt pigs, not really a hike, but a good place to hang, and you can fish or hike from base camp if you want. It is a primative camp site and there are usually no other people around, just us.

So if you don't mind a bunch of guys runnin' around with sharp pointy sticks chasin' wild hogs, come on out. PM me and I will let you know the dates and get a map for ya and all that.

    Granger sounds pretty cool.
Not sure why I've never heard of it!
I'm always trying to find places where there are less people....
Any online maps of the place?
    Thanks
    Scott

Here is the Army Corp of Engineers website for Granger. The maps are under Lake info on the left. Crappie season starts soon! Woot Woot!
