Another way of doing the sewn through quilt is to make it differential. One side of the quilt would be exact dimension needed and the other layer would have the excess fabric needed to make the chambers half circle in shape. This will make the down loft in one direction only.

This is exactly what I have done with my sewn-thru UNDERquilt. Since one side is snugged up tight against the hamock bottome, there is no need of loft there.

This is exactly what I have done with my sewn-thru UNDERquilt. Since one side is snugged up tight against the hamock bottome, there is no need of loft there.

I think that's a great way to save some weight if you're doing an UQ, will keep that in mind for my first UQ. Even if that saved an ounce of fabric only -- that's an ounce of down that one could add instead.
