    2 options for UQ

I am breaking down and gonna try and make a UQ but have a couple questions. Will a mummy bag work to make one? Ive seen more people using square sleeping bags to make them. I wanna be able to get it as small as possible but on a budget as well. Its still a toss up between using a sleeping bag or making one with down.

I was also thinking of putting 600 and 800 fill in it. Splitting it up and having say 3oz of each for a total of 6oz. I wanna make it a 3/4 and also make something to keep my feet warm as well. I dont know how to sew except by hand and I could see that taking awhile to sew that much by hand and have it be strong.

How much should I be looking at spending to make a UQ?

Hard to do it (with down) for less than $100-$150.

6oz of down is only enough for a summer UQ.

Hand sewing is out of the question.

That would be true for me as well, but historically, LOTS of very large, elaborate projects have been done over the years with just hand sewing.

one thing i've learned, if you're going to experiment simply to practice and develop a prototype spend the money. if you're looking to cut corners and use it a lot, you'll spend 1.5-2 times what you planned b/c you'll buy it twice.

i would convert the sleeping bag, it's not that hard. if you plan on using this for late fall or winter don't do a 3/4, you want the loft under you and not compressed.

i would recommend holding off until our feb. hang and taking a look at whatever everyone is using, have a chat, get a feel. i'm sure between most of use you'll have something to use as an uq. if you're adamant about knowing how to convert a sleeping bag, scroll through the feb cbs thread for rifle river and look up paul @ sr####. he's converted a few bags.

i'm also checking on some duck down, a little heavier, same warmth, about the same loft and a lot cheaper.

below is my DIY UQ, i think i posted this prior to you joining.

how is it hard to do for under $100?

i made a few 3 season UQ with down and the most i ever spent was $70
6oz of down is all i ever use in my 3 season UQ...my last one i made i only used 4oz and i'v used it down to 35 degrees no problem

Stormcrow sells down for $6.50 an oz ... you can get cheap ripstop from stormcrow or BWDD for under $3.50 a yard .... and cheaper if you really look around like at wally world

so lets say your making a 3/4 UQ.... 5 yards of 1.1 from where i said is only 17.50

and let say you want 10 oz of down in it thats $65

thats $83.50 ...odds and ends should run you no more then $10

thats $93.50 for a UQ that should take you down to 15 degrees easy

it's not hard to do it cheap if you shop around
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Hey .... you could double up on pads. Tape 'em together if ya' want. Stuff sone clothes under your shoulders and your good to go.........
I have been in Padville quite often. It will get you through the 30ºs.

Realx...and enjoy the project. Make it the way you want it, and more importantly enjoy the project.
